While forest fires traumatize France against the backdrop of a heat wave, the national domain of Chambord is doing everything to enhance its vast fenced forest of 5,100 hectares, half the area of intramural Paris. The estate that houses the castle of François 1er wants to sell CO credits2 economic players wishing to offset their greenhouse gas emissions in this way. The public institution has launched a call for tenders to find an engineering partner capable of defining the best method for its forest to capture carbon and release oxygen.
“The challenge is to quantify this and to give it a price, by adopting the most virtuous management possible of the wooded area. Companies often seek compensation in the southern hemisphere where the practices, which are difficult to control, sometimes amount to fraud, like these rubber plantations exploited industrially and established in place of the primary forest destroyed », explains Jean d’Haussonville. The president of Chambord wants to “offer the healthiest and most reliable forest carbon portfolio possible, by certifying the origin as well as the reality of the sequestered volumes”.
