A 22-year-old man killed five people on Wednesday in Dover, a small village of 1,200 inhabitants located north of Ambérieu-en-Bugey (Ain), before being neutralized by the GIGN. According to newspaper information Progressconfirmed at 20 minutes, he killed several members of his blended family, whom he had been holding hostage in their home since Tuesday evening.
According to the Bourg-en-Bresse prosecutor’s office, the gendarmes learned during the night that several members of a family living in Dover had probably been killed by a man in his twenties, also a member of this family. “For several hours during the night and morning of July 20, 2022, the gendarmes tried to get in touch with the madman, who however refused to answer telephone calls from the gendarmes as well as direct contacts attempted by the negotiators” , continues the prosecution in a press release.
The assault was given by the elite gendarmes of the GIGN this Wednesday, at 11:35 a.m. The soldiers then found that the young man was “determined”. He had “taken refuge in a closed room in the pavilion, his torso and limbs covered with protections and armed with a saber and a long-barreled rifle”.
The gendarmes then asked him several times to lay down his arms. But the young man refused. On the contrary, he continued to point his guns at the soldiers and to advance towards them. The GIGN men shot him, first with a stun gun, then four times with their firearms, mortally wounding him.
Five people, members of a blended family of which the perpetrator was a part, were found dead in the house. The details of the family ties are not yet established with certainty. But according to our information, it is his father, his stepmother and the couple’s three children.
Two investigations were opened by the prosecution: one for intentional homicides entrusted to the Lyon research section, the other to the IGGN, the general inspection of the national gendarmerie concerns the use of weapons by the gendarmes of the GIGN. Why did the young man attack his family? The investigation will have to determine it. According to the first information gathered by the investigators, the perpetrator suffered from psychiatric disorders.
One of the deadliest family killings in France
According to Christian Limousin, Mayor of Dover, this family had been living in the house since July 2020 and “began to invest in the village”. An acquaintance of the family indicated on the spot that the author of the slaughter was 22 years old and worked in a sign of fast food in a nearby town.
“This morning at 8:30 a.m., the gendarmes asked me not to open my bar,” says Tania, a 30-year-old who has been running the village café since March. “The mother of one of the victims called me to tell me that she hadn’t been able to reach her daughter since yesterday,” added the shopkeeper. A large security perimeter has been erected around the center of this village, the main accesses to which have been cordoned off.
A hundred gendarmes, including envoys from the Ain group, the GIGN branch, and criminal investigation technicians were still on the scene this afternoon. This drama is one of the deadliest family killings in France in recent years. In October 2020, a father killed his wife, two children and two nephews in Noisy-le-Sec (Seine-Saint-Denis).
