Shortly before his disappearance in July 2020, Ennio Morricone spoke with Giuseppe Tornatore, for whom he had composed several soundtracks including “Cinema Paradiso”. He looks back on his career, from his childhood in the 1930s when he started out with his trumpeter father to the origin of his most beautiful scores for the cinema… What makes this documentary so interesting is to leave give priority to speaking to the Maestro with concise but relevant remarks. He talks about his training as a classical musician and his shame at having turned away from it.
A portrait also sketched by the filmmakers with whom he worked, including Bernardo Bertolucci, Dario Argento or Clint Eastwood, as well as the singer Joan Baez who interpreted the song of the political drama “Sacco and Vanzetti”. A documented hagiography, which goes back in detail to the birth of his most beautiful compositions, including those for Sergio Leone (“Once upon a time in the West” and his harmonica) or for “Mission”, “Investigation of a citizen above of any suspicion” or “The Hateful Eight” by Tarantino. Indispensable for all those who have enjoyed listening to and humming his themes entered into eternity. 2h35 of happiness!
