For a few months, François Gabart and the Ultim class had been in conflict over an obscure point of regulation concerning the winches (work stations), which must not be located under the deck of a boat, in order to avoid any danger. Still, this dispute prevented the French navigator from appearing at the start of the next Route du Rhum, on November 6th. We’ll spare you the technical details, but justice ruled in favor of Gabart and the Kresk group, owner of the SVR-Lazartigue boat, this Thursday.
The decision focused on the form, namely a memorandum of understanding between Gabart/Kresk and the Ultim class about the conflict to be resolved, which the former denounced, and not on the substance, that is- to say on the conformity or not of the flying maxi-trimaran. The legal request concerned the deadline set between the two parties to find a solution to their dispute, set at March 4. However, the notice was published on March 7.

The decision therefore allows Gabart to present himself on the starting line of the Route du Rhum, a solo transatlantic race which will start from Saint-Malo. “I am relieved of this decision which allows me to concentrate calmly on training and the competition that awaits us. I’m also happy to find the other skippers on the starting line. All these boats together will still allow new memorable races for all the enthusiasts who have shown unfailing support, ”commented the skipper in a press release.
The Ultim class, from which 18 million euros in damages have been claimed by Gabart / Ktresk, can appeal.
