San Francisco, 1970s. Gru already dreams of becoming the greatest supervillain, his role model being Will Karnage, the leader of the Vicious 6. When the latter is betrayed by his cronies, Gru is interviewed to replace him. His hearing goes wrong and he is chased by these experienced gangsters when he steals the precious Zodiac Stone with fearsome powers from them…
Fifth part of the series with this temperamental villain character, supported by the faithful Minions, including Kevin, Stuart, Bob and Otto, willful but clumsy or even downright stupid, as their aberrant actions prove. We sometimes have fun, especially when trying to learn kung fu, but the plot leaves many leads unexplored and the bad guys are underexploited. There remain a few visual and sound gags and the adorable gibberish of the yellow creatures in blue overalls, always dubbed by the Frenchman Pierre Coffin.
For the first time, he is abandoning co-directing to concentrate on his vocal “acting” which is the salt of these adventures, here not delirious enough. Gad Elmaleh still lends his voice to Gru, joined by Gérard Darmon as an aging but agile mentor.
Animated film by Kyle Balda, Brad Ableson and Jonathan Del Val, with Gad Elmaleh, Steve Carell, Gérard Darmon.
