While Laurent Nuñez has just been officially appointed to head the Paris police headquarters this Wednesday, July 20, the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, explained what the major missions to come would be for this senior official. 58 years old.
Gérald Darmanin unveiled this Wednesday the roadmap of the new Paris police chief, Laurent Nuñez, in an interview given to Le Parisien. What will be the missions of this “man of experience” according to the Minister of the Interior, who describes him as “firm, but also full of roundness”?
up to a thousand new police officers
If Gérald Darmanin believes that the needs of the Paris police headquarters will remain “the same”, he assured that “security in Paris” will be his “priority” and intends “above all to intensify, as never before, the fight against delinquency “.
For this, he announces that no less than “a thousand new police stations will be created in 5 years in Paris, including “500 in the next two years”. “A considerable effort made by the State”, according to him.
In addition, “500 new cameras” will also be installed, “in addition to a modernization of the already existing fleet of cameras”. With, in sight, the improvement of the main security missions: the fight against attacks, the theft of watches or delinquency in transport.
On this last point, the Minister of the Interior specifies that he has “increased the presence of police officers by 70% over the past two years”, and wishes “to double it again in the coming year”. And to affirm: “transport is a public space whose territory should be taken back”.
“Solutions” to fight crack
Another important subject: that of the fight against drug trafficking and, more particularly, against crack. “I asked the new prefect of police of Paris to offer me, for the start of the school year, solutions to fight definitively against this scourge”, explains Gérald Darmanin.
“We are dealing with people who are heading towards death and need to be accompanied on a medical level. We have had results in the fight against crack in recent years, ”said the minister, who concedes that “they do not live up to the expectations of Parisians”.
And to achieve this, he says he is ready to put in place “greater solidarity between local authorities and the State”. “We have to stop throwing the ball at each other, the Parisians don’t want that,” concludes the minister.
Better trained agents
The latter also raised the issue of the Parisian municipal police. If he underlines the “historic creation of a municipal police force in Paris”, he nevertheless deplored that they are “today less than 400 agents and unarmed” and promises that the State “will help” the Parisian municipality to “reach the 2,500 municipal police officers announced”.
Finally, Gérald Darmanin announced that he had decided on “a new national law enforcement plan”, which Laurent Nuñez will have to apply. In addition, the minister wants to create specifically for the police officers of the prefecture “a center for training and training in maintaining order”, in Villeneuve-Saint-Georges (94).
