On his social networks, Sylvester Stallone recently spoke big money, returning to the “Rocky” and “Creed” sagas for which he has no rights. And when Sly isn’t happy, he lets it be known.
rocky : a cult license signed Sylvester Stallone
Rocky Balboa is the fictional counterpart of Sylvester Stallone. Indeed, like the character he created, Sly started from almost nothing before becoming an incredible movie star. We must therefore go back to the mid-1970s when the actor combines anecdotal supporting roles and even sees himself forced to shoot in an erotic film to pay his bills. It is also following this film that he will find the nickname of Balboa: The Italian Stallion.
It was during this period that he wrote this famous story of a second-class boxer who one day had the opportunity to face the world heavyweight champion (inspired by the fight between Muhammad Ali and an illustrious stranger by the name by Chuck Wepner). Wanting to play the main role, he refuses all the producers who only want the script.
It was then that Sylvester Stallone met Irwin Winkler and Robert Chartoff, a United Artists production team. The two men are very interested in the project, and, although they are hesitant to put a stranger at the head of the bill, they decide to trust him. They will not be disappointed. The output of rocky was a worldwide success, making Sly a real star. Financially profitable (225 million dollars in revenue for a budget of 1 million), crowned in the biggest ceremonies, the feature film becomes a pop-cultural object.
rocky later gave rise to five sequels, released between 1979 and 2006, and always with Sylvester Stallone in the role of the boxer. From 2015, Sly passes the baton a little bit with the arrival of spin-offs Creed. Rocky Balboa thus becomes a secondary character, taking under his wing the son of his best friend played by Michael B. Jordan.
Sly wants his rights
You might think that Stallone is the happiest of men, being the kingpin of a franchise that he almost single-handedly created. However, according to him, the American actor does not own any rights to the saga, while he is an actor, screenwriter and producer of almost all these opuses. A frustration that he now wishes to correct. This is how on Instagram, the 76-year-old man called out producer Irwin Winkler, the current holder of the license rights. And like his character Rocky, Sly didn’t mince words. Vibe :
While he (Irwin Winkler) has had control of Rocky for 47 years, and now of Creed, I would really like to recover a little of what remains of my rights, and this before he exclusively passes everything on to his children. I think that would be an honest gesture on the part of a 93-year-old gentleman, wouldn’t it? It’s a painful subject that eats my soul, because I want to leave something Rocky for my children.
Never in the calculation when he speaks in interviews and on social networks when it comes to big money (Bruce Willis knows something about this), Stallone ultimately only goes back to an old sea serpent that has lasted for years. Indeed, in 2019, he had already spoken on this subject to varietywishing to recover part of the rights of rocky and considering himself aggrieved on the shares he had received on certain films:
I have zero rights to Rocky. Every word, every syllable, every grammatical error comes from me. I was told: “You have been paid, what are you complaining about? I was furious.
Is it because of his lyrics that Stallone only serves as a producer on Creed 3 ? Possible. As an actor, he will in any case be expected on the projects Samaritan, Tulsa King and Expandables 4.
