The foods and beverages we consume on a regular basis not only play a role in our overall health, but also in the fight against aging. Eating lots of fruits and vegetables, favoring omega-3s and limiting added sugars are known to help you stay in shape despite the years. Several studies have also demonstrated the interest of tea to counteract age.

Tea: a drink with many anti-aging properties

Tea consumption has tripled in France over the past 20 years. According to the Franchise Observatory, 2 out of 3 French people claim to be lovers of this drink. And that would be quite a good thing. The drink contains many powerful antioxidants like catechins and the flavonoids. These help to fight against cellular aging, also called oxidative stress.

“The oxidative stress is a phenomenon linked to the fact that our body constantly produces toxic substances for our cells: free radicals. Normally, a detoxification system helps get rid of it. But sometimes this system is not enough. Free radicals will then accumulate and cause damage: this is oxidative stress”, explains Inserm.

Furthermore, the tea contains theine. This molecule has the same stimulating effect as caffeine. The rate varies according to the varieties. It also houses:

  • of the tannins : these are the molecules responsible, among other things, for the color of the beverage. Coupled with theine, the tannins have a stimulating effect. On the other hand, they inhibit the absorption of mineral salts and more particularly of iron;
  • the theobromine and theophylline, stimulating substances;
  • from fluorine ;
  • of the’oxalic acid.

Tea: what are its benefits?

The benefits of tea are many for your health. According to a study published in the journal Cellular Physiology and Biochemistry, beyond their anti-aging virtues, green tea and black tea would contain effective molecules to fight against hypertension. Compounds in green and black tea relax blood vessels by activating ion channel proteins in the wall of blood vessels. Green tea compounds could thus be useful for creating new treatments for hypertension.

An extremely interesting prospect considering the number of people with hypertension in the world. “As one-third of the world’s population suffers from hypertension and this condition is considered the number one modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease and premature mortality, new approaches to treating hypertension have enormous potential e n terms of improving public health”, say researchers from the University of California in a press release published on March 8.

The composition of the teas varies according to the plant variety. Some are known to help slow aging. Dietitians listed the most effective in the review EatThis.
