The LR deputy for the Alpes-Maritimes Eric Ciotti wants to make wearing a tie compulsory for men in the Hemicycle. He invokes a certain “looseness in clothing” and more particularly among rebellious deputies.
If the habit does not make the monk, it worries Eric Ciotti. The deputy LR of the Alpes-Maritimes and quaestor of the National Assembly is exasperated by the behavior of some of his colleagues, more particularly the elected officials of France Insoumise.
Thursday July 21, 2022, he wrote a letter addressed to the President of the National Assembly Yaël Braun-Pivet in order to alert her to a point which worries him: the wearing of a tie. More specifically, he asks that it become mandatory.
I ask the President of the National Assembly, the obligation to wear a tie in the hemicycle of the Palais Bourbon to prevent certain deputies, in particular from France Insoumise, from allowing themselves to wear more and more relaxed outfits. pic.twitter.com/WvdOvG0XQ0

In his letter, Eric Ciotti explains that these deputies “in defiance of the honor they have to represent our compatriots in this institution […] allow themselves to wear more and more relaxed outfits in the Hemicycle”.
“clothing excesses”
On the strength of this observation, Eric Ciotti affirms that “the wearing of a suit and tie for men” is “the necessary mark of respect due to our institutions and to our compatriots”.
He argues by evoking article 9 of the General Instruction of the Office: “the dress adopted by the deputies in the Hemicycle must remain neutral and be similar to a town outfit”. The elected representative of the Alpes-Maritimes believes that this article 9 “is now insufficient in its wording, given the abuses we are witnessing”.
Eric Ciotti concludes his letter by explicitly asking for an “obligation to wear a tie for men in the Hemicycle”. A request that should make people react.
