On July 15, 2022, on the Rappel conso government website, batches of gnocchi number 1442, bearing the barcode number 3439496603001 are recalled due to the presence of Bacillus cereus presumptive.
These are gnocchi that can be found in the prepared meals or snacks departments, in 1kg bags, from the Metro brand. The latter was sold throughout France and therefore concerns all Metro in metropolitan France. If you have purchased an affected lot, simply return it to the place of purchase for a refund. You have until August 13, 2022 to return your contaminated gnocchi.
This product is being recalled because the brand discovered that a bacterium was present in the gnocchi at a rate much higher than the alert threshold.
Bacillus Cereus bacteria: responsible for vomiting and diarrhea
According to INRAE, “the bacterium, bacillus cereus, is responsible for food-borne illnesses (TIAC) which result in vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhoea. Patients generally recover spontaneously, but more serious forms may require hospitalization (4% of cases in 2018) and a few deaths have been reported. B. cereus can also cause other types of infections, especially in newborns where it has been identified as a cause of death in maternity wards. »
You should know that the ingestion of these bacteria does not necessarily cause a infection. This will depend on the type of bacteria and also on the dose consumed. Bacteria are usually found in the environment: soil, water and plants. Thus the most frequently contaminated foods are rice, vegetables, potatoesspices…
Symptoms may appear 2 hours after contamination with the emetic toxin (vomiting) and 8 to 16 hours after contamination with the diarrheal toxin (diarrhoea and severe abdominal pain). These infections often heal on their own within 12 to 24 hours.
