Mothmen 1966 is a video game novel developed by LCB Game Studio and published by Chorus Worldwide. It’s an independent video game which, through its graphic touch, will make you fall back into childhood for some or discover the joy of games with very large pixels for others. This title is an adventure game with a hint of horror, set in America, in 1966.
The Legend of the Mothmen
The legend of the Mothmen, Homme-Bappillon in French, is an American legend that appeared, I give you a thousand, in 1966! It was in West Virginia that the concept of what are also called mothmen was born. Human-bodied creatures with wings and red eyes. These creatures are attracted to light, hence the name moth, as this race of butterfly is also attracted to light. After the first testimonies, others came until 1967, after the collapse of the Point Pleasant Silver Bridge.
John Keel, a writer, author of various books on legends and unexplained phenomenon. In 1970, he wrote a book in which he transcribed all the testimonies recorded on this affair. Thirty-six years later, Mark Pellington directs the film “The Shadow Prophecy”, adaptation of the novel by our writer from the 70s.
Nowadays, the Mothman has become an attraction, like Area 51. Point Pleasant, there is a statue of him and a museum. There is also an annual festival dedicated to him.
A trio of characters
USA, 1966, you begin the story with a character named Holt, a man in his fifties who has lived with his bedridden grandmother for over 60 years. His grandmother is all he has left, his family, his father, mother and sister died in a tragic accident. One evening, when he manages his gas station alone, men in black come to ask you questions about a strange dream you had… Mystery!
In addition to Holt, you play two other characters, a couple, Lee and Rebecca. A couple in crisis, each character has their little secrets. The man has a complicated past with his father, a drunkard, violent who often raised his hand on his mother, but also on his son. The woman, meanwhile, is pregnant, but she no longer knows where she is and feels that her couple is failing. She’s not sure she wants to keep the baby, unfortunately, it’s a different time, well, given what’s going on in the United States, it’s to be wondered. At that time, abortion did not exist, and the only way to abort according to her friends would be to use a coat hanger.
So you understood it even if the main theme of the game deals with an American legend. The story will take you through quite disturbing and touching moments in the lives of these characters that you learn to discover during the ten chapters of this Point & Click.
A story punctuated by mini-games
In this Point & Click, you will see the scenes scrolling on the screen as well as the dialogues, you must read the different lines of dialogues that scroll and make your choices accordingly. It’s up to you to choose whether you are suspicious or more friendly, some of your choices will have repercussions on the following lines of dialogue. Sometimes it’s about choices of action that you will have to make and not of words, these, if you miss them, they will lead you to certain death.
Throughout your adventure in Mothmen 1966, the video game novel phases will be interrupted by mini game phases all different, often in the form of an enigma that will require you to think a little. Reflection that will postpone the end of the game for a few minutes. Ten chapters, counting about an hour and a half to overcome it.
Mothmen 1966, a very present graphic and sound atmosphere
Two very good points of the game, its atmosphere whether sound or graphic, both are very clean. Graphically the game is in pixel art, one would think that it would have the effect of a good headache like on some old games, but this is not the case. I personally played the game in one go without having a headache except maybe during the “L” puzzle.
On the sound side, the sound effects are super nice, it really feels like an old RPG with scrolling texts. Musically, the game is very well composed and the soft melodies will punctuate the fairly calm dialogue scenes while others will be more intense and will install tension and stress in the scenario.
In addition to providing the main scenario, you will find a photo gallery, always in pixel art of course. To unlock and admire the entire gallery, you will have to perform certain actions during the story.
Other bonus content you can play original version of game solitaire. For those unfamiliar with solitaire, this is a game played with a basic deck of cards. It is a game that is played alone hence its name. Here we are talking abouta more complicated version, because when you draw a card from the discard pile, you have to guess what color it will be. If the answer is wrong, the game is lost. To place a card on another, it is imperative that the latter be one level above or below. For example, to put down a card on a five, you can put down a four or a six. This little solitaire variable is really fun to play.
Mothmen 1966 is really a very good game, the story, the pixel art, the music, the retro side, the mini-games, everything is successful. The legend of the Mothmen continues to thrive through the ages.
