Sunscreen, which will soon celebrate its hundredth anniversary, has made its way into the beach bags of the French. This summer again, it will be displayed by many holidaymakers despite the growing reluctance about its composition.
It comes back every summer faster than any upbeat music. Sunscreen has become the true ally of any vacationer or anyone wishing to tan without burning. Invented in 1935 by Eugène Schueller, at the time when holidays became accessible to the greatest number with the appearance of paid leave, it is approaching its hundredth anniversary. A small tube that has become indispensable over time, 25,000 tonnes of it are sold each year. “In the 60s, everyone was looking to be tanned, it becomes valued”analyzes the sociologist Jean-François Amaldieu.
But his recipe is increasingly scrutinized, because some chemical ingredients are worrying. Anne-Marie Gabelica, young entrepreneur and founder of oOlution, explores the possibility of a 100% natural oil with, in particular, vanilla and marigold flowers. Hawaii and Thailand have taken the decision to ban certain sunscreens on their beaches to protect biodiversity.
