This is a measure that should do good for the wallets of many French people, both individuals and professionals. The TotalEnergies group announces a program to reduce the price of its fuels from the start of the school year in September. A measure intended to relieve purchasing power.
The rebate will extend until the end of the year, with two levels: a reduction of 20 euro cents per liter between the 1er September and 31 October, then it will drop to just 10 euro cents per liter from 1er November to December 31. The energy company specifies that “the price reductions will apply from the first liter purchased, without limit of amount, for all petroleum fuels sold in stations and are added to the discount put in place by the State”.
At the end of June, the tanker had also announced a discount of 12 cents per liter this summer in its 120 motorway service stations.
Avoid a tax on superprofits
In his press release, Patrick Pouyanné, CEO of TotalEnergies, explains that he prefers “to make an immediate and direct contribution for our customers, rather than an indirect tax which would penalize our refineries”. The measure of corporate taxation taking advantage of the current crisis was part of the solutions proposed by Brussels to the Member States to counter inflation.
Guest of BFMTV this Friday morning, the Minister of the Economy Bruno Le Maire welcomes a “fair, strong and good for consumers” decision on the part of TotalEnergies. “I prefer that the money go into the pockets of consumers rather than into the pocket of the State”. The Minister explains that he asked Total to make additional efforts to reduce prices at the pump.

In an interview with “Echos” at the end of June, Bruno Le Maire left the door open to an extension of the discount of 18 euro cents on fuel until the end of the year: “We are therefore ready to hand to responsible opposition: why not consider extending the 18-cent rebate until the end of the year, if economic conditions so require, rather than embarking on extremely expensive tax measures? “.
