On its website, Météo France announced on July 13, 2022 that: “France is experiencing a heat wave which will become intense between Sunday (July 17) and next Tuesday (July 19). Thus, in the south of France, temperatures oscillate between 38 and 40°C.
These high temperatures are difficult for adults to live with, but they are even more so for children. The youngest among them are very susceptible to various heat-related conditions (dehydration, hyperthermia, heat stroke). The Ministry of Solidarity and Health also recalls the various signs that should alert parents.

The government recalls that “the heat always tires but that it can lead to serious and even fatal accidents, such as dehydration or heat stroke. »
However, simple gestures make it possible to avoid accidents.
Extreme heat: shade, water and hat
You have to know, we’re talking about dehydration when you lose more fluid through sweating or urinating than you consume. In children under 6 months, the loss of water can be very rapid, more than in adults. The Ministry of Health explains: “The infant’s body is rich in water, so its fragility is maximum. Water represents 75% to 80% of a newborn’s weight, 65% of that of an infant over 1 year old. »
It is of course recommended to dress your child with light clothes, cotton, preferably light-coloured. You can also moisten his clothes to lower his body temperature.
Even if he doesn’t ask, make your child drink. Less abundant and darker urine is a sign that your baby is not sufficiently hydrated. If he has difficulty drinking, you can also feed him fresh foods that contain a lot of water, such as watermelon.
Avoid going out in the sun between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. If you are on vacation, at the beach for example, dress your child in an anti-UV T-shirt or a jumpsuit, a bucket hat and a pair of sunglasses. From time to time, moisten her bob to refresh her head. You can also use a mister to cool it down.
Finally, if you are breastfeeding your baby, the feedings should be more frequent.
