An investigation was opened this Friday, July 22, after the Manko restaurant, located on Avenue Montaigne (8th) was accused of racism following an “incident that occurred on Saturday evening”. The security guard of the establishment would have refused to let in several black women, despite their reservation.
The Paris prosecutor’s office opened an investigation on Friday targeting the Manko restaurant, accused of having refused entry to three black people. “An investigation was launched today on grounds of discrimination based on origin, ethnicity or nationality in the offer or supply of a good or service,” the prosecutor’s office told Le Parisien.
A blow for this posh establishment. With its elaborate cocktails and refined dishes, the Manko attracts many customers from all over the world. On Saturday, a young woman from Montreal who came to visit Paris with her friends posted a video of more than three minutes on TikTok to denounce the racism they allegedly suffered at the entrance to the restaurant.
In this video, we can see a security guard from the establishment rejecting the group of young black women, despite their reservation, because of their outfits which, according to him, would be “no evening”. Yet dressed, two of the young women are dressed in dresses and the other wears a white shirt with flowing pants, all three are in heels.
According to the three women, the security guard refused them access because of their skin color. In this same video, we can also see other people, white, who manage to enter the restaurant without any problem, without having to justify their clothing, while another couple, black, is also turned down for the same reasons as the three Canadian friends.
The restaurant apologizes
Faced with the extent of the controversy on social networks, the restaurant wanted to publicly apologize. The group, contacted by Le Parisien, denounces an “unspeakable act” of this security guard, “an employee employed by a service provider”. “We asked for and obtained his dismissal,” said their spokesperson.
“Following the incident that occurred on Saturday evening in Paris, the Manko apologizes. Manko respects a charter of values that promote equality, respect, tolerance and benevolence for all. The necessary sanctions were immediately and permanently taken”, wrote the management on social networks.
anger does not fall
Apologies that are not enough to bring down the anger of Internet users who are calling for “real sanctions”. Some also claim that this is not the first time that the staff of the restaurant located avenue Montaigne has “questionable practices”. Evidenced by several reviews left in recent months on different sites to rate the restaurant.
it’s not from yesterday. here are comments from 4 months ago / 3 YEARS already talking about this, their same excuse to refuse blacks because they are not in “evening dress”

On social networks, the man presenting himself as the incriminated security guard also justified himself by saying that he had only “respected the wishes of the staff of the establishment” complaining of “paying for the broken pot”. The group denies the Parisian, ensuring that the only instruction to its security guards is “the refusal of people who are intoxicated or who have consumed narcotics”.
Since the publication of the video, the restaurant has been the subject of a wave of negative reviews on Google. As a result, the establishment’s average was significantly lowered for several hours before the notices of the last twenty-four hours were deleted.
