It is absolutely recommended to do a sporting activity in the event of Crohn’s disease, if one refers to the advice of Marine Le Bras, sports coach with a State diploma BPJEPS AF (Professional Patent for Youth, Education Popular and Sports), who practices in Canada. She is the founder of MA Performance and explains from the outset that “the fact of practicing a adapted sports activity will make it possible to improve his general lifestyle, his physical and mental health and thus improve his resilience to the symptoms of the disease”.

Be careful, however, not to abuse high-intensity sports. In this category of activity, we include everything that is in the field of strength, endurance and cardio shouldn’t be pushed too high. “You have to pay attention to both the level of intensity of sports practice and also to the volume of training chosen”, underlines Marine Le Bras.

“We forget the restrictive diets”

Among the physical activities that can be practiced to cope with Crohn’s disease, there is pilates, yoga, tennis, martial arts or bodybuilding. This last practice is particularly recommended if it is not pushed on high intensity or large volume. Other sports like cross fit, power lifting, sprinting, HIIT-type training can be practiced if the person is able to spare his effort and does not seek to push his practice to a high intensity (High intensity interval training). If this is not the case, it is not recommended to perform these sports.

Conversely, activities of the type triathlon, trail running, marathon, are perfect examples of physical activities that are contraindicated for an individual with Crohn’s disease. In all cases, physical activity should not exceed 45 minutes to 1 hour and 15 minutes of training depending on the sport chosen. We also recommend 2 to 4 days of rest per week.

What diet when choosing sport? Marine Le Bras is very clear: “We forget restrictive ketogenic diets (keto), intermittent fasting, low carbs diet (without carbohydrates), Dukan dietetc… it is important to eat a variety of foods because each macro and micro nutrient will provide benefits on resilience to disease”. Finally, 2 to 3 liters of water per day are recommended for a person who practices regular physical activity.
