- Lakes Many of the Forest's lakes were naturally fishless, but are now stocked. Stocking is exclusively of various trout species. Most stocking is by air and occurs about every three years. Maximum fish size occurs at about three years. Contact Idaho Fish and Game for their stocking histories. Because the opportunity is so large, we do not list individual lakes, but they vary from an easy walk on maintained trails with developed camping nearby, to remote lakes with no trails that are miles from mechanized access. Idaho Fish and Game manages several lakes under trophy regulations requiring the release of all but the largest trout. Carefully study the regulations. Some lakes contain native species listed under the Endangered Species Act, so knowing how to identify those species is important. A few lakes that potentially have listed trout or salmon are Roosevelt Lake, Loon Lake, and Marshall Lake. Take the time to learn how to identify these fish. Pick up a copy of the Idaho Fish & Game
